Video-enhanced professional learning can change the culture of a school and help raise student achievement
Why adopt video-enhanced professional learning?
The mentor model
Paired with a master teacher. new teachers film their classroom practice and receive feedback from the mentor.
The PLC model
Ask each teacher from a certain grade/content area to film a short segment of themselves using a research- based strategy or skill that is a focus of the building and share it with the principal or share it with their PLC. Use a lessen tuning or refining protocol to structure a conversation around the video
The lesson study model
Research and create a collaboratively designed lesson, teach and film the lesson, reconvene to watch, review, debrief, and refine the lesson. Ask the building specialist to film themselves as they model new skills or strategies in a class and share that.
The professional development model
Ask teachers or presenters to be sure to include samples of themselves using the skills or strategy with the students when they are going to demonstrate in front of their peers.
The instructional coaching model
Identify and set a goal for improving instructional evidence-based practice, use video to model practice for the teacher being coached. The teacher applies the practice then watches and reviews the practice, refines the practice and sets a new goal.
Peer observation model
Through teacher-driven observation, teachers engage peers in gathering and analyzing classroom data, data that is captured by video that is evidenced-based.
The skills library model
Create a skills library around the school's instructional focuses for use with new or struggling teachers or use with parents to help them understand what the areas of focus are.
